Are You also Deceived?
I remember Fr. Ronald Roheiser, OMI once said that ‘the crowd’ in the gospels meant a group of people who acted wrongly and did not know what they were doing. Today we experience the same here: “But this crowd, which does not know the law, is accursed” (Jn 7:40-53). The crowd angrily and violently wanted to arrest Jesus. The crowd is trained and influenced by some leaders who use their position and power in their own selfish and manipulative ways.
Are you also deceived by some group leaders and crowds in your life? We live in the World Wide Web age now. People could use their own digital vehicles: Youtube, Facebook, Tweeter and others to spread out any news without caring about the whole truth and the damage to one’s reputation.
How can we discern the truth? First, we need to make mistakes. Second, we need to learn from our mistakes by honestly praying over and studying about it. And third, we need to apply the truth we discover in communal love. Once, my Jesuit spiritual director Fr. Bill Creed, SJ told me, “Tat, In order to know if you do/did the will of God, check and see if you have love, peace, joy, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control within you now.” The fruits of the Holy Spirit (Gal 5:22-23) are the fruits of doing the will of God. If we are not having these fruits in our lives, we might be deceived either by ourselves or a “Devil” out there.
Question: Do you truly have the fruits of the Holy Spirit in you now?
